HNNY - Mys

Label: Let's Play House

There’s a thriving group of Swedish producers who have been taking house music to task over the last few years. Centred around the Local Talk imprint, these producers take a modern approach to classic house sounds, leaving things rough around the edges while generally oozing warmth and class. While Local Talk may have started issuing a few too many homogenous Beatport singles for its own good, its discovery of young producer HNNY is a coup that has continued to bear fruit. With the superb For The Very First Time, the hypnotic white-label magic of Boy and a hilarious/inspired Mariah Carey edit, HNNY has shown a soulfulness and musicality which outshines many of his label-mates. Now the rising star takes to the Let's Play House imprint for a solid collection of house burners, including a brilliant turn on the title track.

Mys

Mys is pure FM magic: an alchemic concoction of wordless vocal harmonies and a driving bass bounce, held together by a functional drum loop which allows the soaring vocals to take centre stage. Kela is a less striking effort but perfectly competent, where a heftier drum pattern underpins clipped vocals and warm, whirring pads. The remixes are a mixed bag; as Young Marco takes only the bassline and a few vocal flourishes, turning Mys into a bleeping saccharine number which fails to really hit home, particularly given the lush soulfulness of the original. Shakarchi Straneus’ take on Kela is more interesting, flooding the original in delay and letting aqueous synth washes play over the surface. It’s a solid effort but doesn’t progress over its 6-minute runtime, feeling a little bloated in the process. As a whole HNNY’s latest isn’t his strongest, but Mys is a powerful track which will for many be worth the asking price on its own.
